Many followed after them in worship. Next, the Beast of the Earth commands the building of an image and then orders all the earth to bow before it or die. Many again fall into worship. Lastly the Beast of the Earth mandates that all the earth be marked or face severe economic disaster. It is this mark that will be the focus of all three parts of this series.<br /> <br /> Bob discusses the purpose of the mark, which is to lead all the earth into worship of the Beast of the Sea. The use of miracles induced what appears to be a voluntary worship. The second threatened death to those who would not bow. Now the mark puts economic sanctions on those who still continue to hold out. Without the ability to buy or sell, a person would certainly die of starvation.<br /> <br /> The reason for the mark is to identify those who have succumbed to the system in obedience. A visible sign is anticipated.<br /> <br /> The consequences, as previously mentioned, is economic. The world of any surviving Christians at this point just got extremely difficult. Also, any reference to years is not to be taken literally, but more symbolically with a theological point of view. In addition, Daniel’s 70th week began in the first century and continues until the return of Jesus Christ.<br /> <br /> The second view, labeled the Literalist view, considers Daniel’s 70 weeks to be literally understood. The events are real events in time and the passage of time can be reasonably calculated. The Literalist understands the events of the 70th week as not having taken place, thus a future fulfillment is necessary.<br /> <br /> In this last session Bob will conclude by answering the Symbolist question, “if this week is so important and future coming, then why is Daniel 9:27 the only Scripture text mentioning it?”<br /> <br /> The answer to this question will demonstrate a future fulfillment of this week and show how many other texts tie nicely into Daniel’s 70th week prophecy.<br /> <br /> Finally a conclusion will be made concerning Daniel’s prophecy. This detailed study focuses on two main viewpoints. The first is whether these verses have already occurred in our past or does any of it have a future fulfillment. The second point is whether these verses are to be taken literally or symbolically with a theological meaning.<br /> <br /> The literalist understands the years and events described by Daniel in a natural sense with common understanding. Specifically, "a year is a year". Therefore Daniel’s 70 weeks are 490 literal years. The symbolist finds it necessary to view these verses in a symbolic manner, and understands a theological meaning behind Daniel’s words. Thus segments of time are presenting theological events and are not to be seen as literal years.<br /> <br /> Bob has challenged the listener to gather the evidence of both viewpoints and then make a determination as to which one is most reasonable.<br /> <br /> In this exposition of Daniel 9:27 Bob will present again both the symbolists understanding and the literalists viewpoint.<br /> <br /> The symbolist understands this verse to be a description of the events occurring in verse 26. Jesus Christ is the maker of the new covenant. The destroyer of the city and temple in 70AD is the Roman general Titus who brings an end to sacrifice and offering. The 70th week of Daniel includes the temple destruction in the middle. The last part of the 70th week is a time when believers are continually added and will continue until the return of Jesus Christ. There is no 7 year period of time coming in the future.<br /> <br /> The literalist argues that the chronological aspect of Daniel's teaching continues. The one week is a literal 7-year segment of time yet to come. This week will bring about the end of the age. In the middle of this week, 3-½ years, sacrifice and offering will end. This necessitates the building of a new temple, but likely much less ornate than in the past. Finally the one who rises in the middle of this week and destroys, will himself be destroyed. This “one” is the biblical Antichrist. Since a period of time like this and a person this evil has yet to appear in history, a futurist perspective must be held.<br /> <br /> The interpretation of this verse broadens the gap between the literalist and the symbolist. The impact of choosing one or the other will affect so many other eschatological passages. As he unpacks the passage he will focus in on whether these verses should be held as being in the “Past, Present or Future”. A person’s view will have many theological and eschatological implications. If all in the past then Daniel’s seventieth week has a far different meaning than if in the future.<br /> <br /> A second focal point is whether these verses were intended to be taken symbolically or literally. If symbolically then dating is less significant as we unfold the symbolic meaning behind the various events. If literally, then we should be able to point to times when these events took place.<br /> <br /> In the first two sessions, concerning verses 9:24-25, we saw how it was reasonable to hold to a literal view and see dates and times as historically recorded.<br /> <br /> In this third session, Bob will continue to look at these two focal points. Most will agree that the events in verse 9:26 have already occurred in our past and are recorded in our history books. However, when comparing the symbolic view to the literal view the differences become strikingly apparent.<br /> <br /> The symbolic view sees this verse starting with Jesus baptism or cross and continuing until His return (still in our future). During this time the temple and city are destroyed and the nation of Israel is no longer the focal point. Since Jesus has not returned those alive today are living in the second half of Daniel’s seventieth week. This will be further investigated and explained in session four.<br /> <br /> In contrast the literalist continues to interpret these verses as literal years and events. However they cannot simply add the seven years after the seven weeks and sixty-two weeks because then the prophecy would have ended in 37AD. Bob Hunt discusses the need and plausibility of inserting a gap of time in between the sixty-ninth week and the seventieth week. This gap of time pushes the final seven years into our future. This maintains a literal point of view and a futurist view for the completion of Daniel’s prophecy.<br /> <br /> The purpose of this gap is also explained. Rather than replacing Israel the gospel is preached and gentiles are added to the tree while maintaining Israel as a nation. Romans 11:25-26 offers a great explanation.<br /> <br /> In conclusion Bob challenges the listener to consider all the arguments and determine the most reasonable point of view, symbolic or literal. The two overarching areas of emphasis are first, whether these verses are concerning our past, present or our future and secondly, should we interpret this section literally or would a symbolic theological approach be better. Each session of this study will focus on one verse and unpack the meaning in light of these two concerns. Then in conclusion we will summarize our findings to draw an overall conclusion.<br /> <br /> There are several views on this passage and many will debate it vigorously. Therefore, when a section like this is studied we gather evidence and then choose the most reasonable interpretation. Session one pointed to a more literal interpretation as being the most probable.<br /> <br /> In this second-part epsiode, we will unpack verse 25 with the same two areas of concern in mind. This verse is describing events that have all concluded in the past. The starting point may be debated, but all commentators and theologians agree that the first coming of Jesus Christ is the end. Thus all 483 years laid out by Daniel have already occurred.<br /> <br /> It is the second point that raises much debate and discussion. Those who take a more symbolic view of these 483 years hold to a starting point of 538BC and conclude with Jesus first coming. This period of time, with this approach, covers about 570 years and therefore they say it must be symbolic. It depicts a time of great struggle for the Jewish people leading up to the Messiah.<br /> <br /> Those who hold to a literal view of this timeline point to another starting point. There are several theologians and historians who demonstrate how 483 years can be shown literally. The 49 years in this verse describe the time needed to rebuild Jerusalem. Leviticus will play a key role in developing this connection. Finally, he will look at the Israelites Year of Jubilee. A connection will further be made between the Year of Jubilee and what may be called the Ultimate Jubilee. The Ultimate Jubilee is when the Jewish people realize final forgiveness, redemption and complete freedom. This Jubilee will satisfy the six purposes laid out by the Lord by the end of the seventy-week prophecy.
